Abū-Qatādah was once [travelling] with the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him. As they got to one of the roads leading to Makkah, he lagged behind with some of his companions - who were in the state of consecration(1), while he was not. He then saw a wild ass, so he mounted his horse and asked his companions to hand him his whip, but they refused. He then asked them for his spear, but again they refused, so he took it [himself], attacked the wild ass and killed it. Some of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, ate from it while others declined. When they caught up with the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, they asked him about that, and he replied, "It is but food that God has given you."
